Title: Imaging The Dead
Description:

Background:
In England and Wales almost half of all deaths are currently referred to H M Coroners, and of those almost half undergo conventional autopsy. We have one of the highest rates of autopsy in the western world. An autopsy is distressing to many bereaved people and may be contrary to their religious and cultural beliefs. Alternatives to conventional autopsy are the subject of research sponsored by the Department of Health on behalf of HM Government. This meeting will consider the preliminary results of some of the research and whether or not radiological imaging techniques are likely to be a satisfactory alternative (and not simply an adjunct) to conventional autopsy in providing reliable medical causes of death.

Aims:
To raise awareness as well as limiting expectations in this emerging specialty for the professionals in this field, and the public.

The conference will provide a platform to disseminate the results of the current research Department of Health in this field.

Objectives:
To report preliminary results of the DoH-funded research into radiological imaging techniques as a possible adjunct or even alternative to conventional autopsy.

For Radiologists the conference will address the technical aspects; handling the body; the legal framework.

For Pathologists and Coroners the conference will identify the role of imaging and how it will assist them in their work.
