Breakthrough claimed in time of death determination

A Norwegian professor this week said he has developed a device designed to determine a victim's time of death more precisely than has been possible previously.

Rognum said that until now investigators used decreasing body temperature and morphological changes in a body to determine the time of death. The closest investigators could come, he said, was within 90 minutes. Using the new handheld device - the Time Of Death kit - investigators can increase the accuracy of time of death determination to within 36 minutes, the Norway Times reported.

Rognum also told public broadcaster NRK that the new method can be used for a period of up to four days, compared to the 24 hours using temperature sensitive devices.

The Norway Times said the FBI and Scotland Yard will begin testing the TOD device.
