Irish Institute of Radiography supports formation of a Forensic Group

Over 200 radiographers attended a "Forensic Mini-Conference" in Cork last Saturday organised by Mr Raj Chopra and Mr Shane Hayes of University College Cork in association with the Irish Institute of Radiographers.

The conference, held at the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex was attended by the The State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy and her deputy Dr Margot Bolster who spoke about the past present and future use of radiograpphy in forensic investigation. An international perspective on the need for training, regulation and protocols for such work was given by Mark Viner, AFR secretary and a focus on forensic radiography in Ausatralia was provided by Sharon Simpson of St Vincent's Hospital Dublin.

Jonathan McNulty of University College Dublin and the Irish Institute of Radiography concluded the session with a summary of the existing Irish Institute Guideleines on Forensic Imaging. He re-enforced the Institute's commitment to development of standards and training in forensic radiography and announced a revision of the guidleines which is expected to be published later in the year.

Following the conference, a meeting of members interested in forming a forensic group met with Mark McEntee and  Jonathan McNulty of the Irish Institute, together with  Mark Viner of AFR. It was agreed that there was a need for such a group to develop standards and training in forensic radiography in the Republic of ireland and the proposal was strongly supported by Mr McEntee and Mr McNulty who agreed to take the matter to the next meeting of the Council of the Irish Institute.  It was agreed that the group should forge strong links with AFR and there was strong support for the proposal for an AFR international committee. Mr Viner agreed to take the issue to the next meeting of the AFR committee and seek their support for the Irish group.
