Radiographers commended by Metropolitan Police

Metropolitan Police OCU Commanders Commendation

On Tuesday 19th May 2009, several Forensic Radiographers were honoured in a Metropolitan Police commendation ceremony at The Law Society in London.  This was in recognition for their role in a disaster victim identification (DVI) mass fatality exercise that took place in London in October 2008.  This was an international, multi agency operation designed to test the nation’s resilience response to a large scale disaster.  Radiology formed a vital part of the identification of potential victims and its importance was once again demonstrated throughout the duration of this exercise.

These Radiographers, who were all members of the International Association of Forensic Radiographers (IAFR) and were also United Kingdom Forensic Radiography Response Team (UKFRRT) members, were given an invaluable opportunity to utilise their theoretical and practical forensic training throughout the duration of this event.  Denise Elliott, from Poole NHS Foundation Trust, stated “I found this an excellent opportunity to put my skills and knowledge into action, and work alongside other members of the DVI team.  This has given me confidence in my ability to do this job in the event of a real disaster”.

The commendations were presented by Chief Superintendent Simon Lewis and were awarded in recognition for the commitment and dedication shown by team members who undertake forensic radiography response voluntarily in addition to their normal working roles
