Sir Alec Jeffreys has Concerns About Expansion of DNA Databases

The rapid expansion of the United Kingdom’s DNA database beyond just convicted criminals has spurred privacy concerns. Included among those with concerns is Sir Alec Jeffreys, the discoverer of DNA fingerprinting.“I’m convinced that like every other country which has a database we should only be keeping the DNA of those who have been convicted of crimes,” Jeffreys says.

The United Kingdom’s DNA database holds more than 380,000 samples from unsolved crime scenes. With the highest proportion of DNA samples held for the population of its country, one in 14 UK citizens are in the database.
