AFR announces donation to Peruvian Forensic Anthropolgy TeamNovember 11, 2007 AFR has secured the donation of a portable X-Ray machine to the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team. (EPAF) The EPAF was set up in 1997 and is one of several Latin American forensic teams that investigates the abuses of former regimes. The teams are renowned for using science to advocate for relatives of the missing, and several of their members, have lent their expertise to the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.
AFR was approached by the team last year with a request for assistance in securing a portable x-ray machine that could be used to examine human remains with the aim of identifying the deceased and documenting ante and peri-mortem trauma. In response to an advertisment on the AFR website, AFR member Ruth Sutherland approached her local vetinary practice in Scotland, who had an old but still functioning portable x-ray machine which they agreed to donate to the EPAF. The machine has been checked and adjusted by engineers from X-Ograph and is being prepared for transportation to Peru. Jose-Pablo Baraybar, head of the EPAF said "I am delighted - our anthopologists will now have access to on-site x-ray facilities which will be of great benefit to our investigations" The EPAF also offers opportunities for volunteers to work with the team, and it is hoped that AFR members will be able to volunteer to work with the team, once the new equipment is ready for action.
